Student placement: Software Developer

Duration: July/Aug 2010 - June/July 2011 (negotiable)
Salary: circa £15,000 with possible bonus for outstanding performance

The placement will involve working on one or more software components that will form part of an ongoing update to a globally successful data exploration and modelling product widely used in the oil industry. During the placement, the work assigned will primarily depend on the interests and abilities of the placement student, but will initially draw from the following responsibilities:

  • Developing an interactive mapping component, combining the fields of computer graphics and geographic information systems and extending our existing graphing functionality;
  • Writing a help system, addressing a broad range of concerns from data management to the user interface, including considering issues such as maintainability and usability;
  • Supporting the interpretation of data by developing statistical analysis tools which can range from simple calculation of statistics for variables to the development of more complex models for prediction and interpolation including neural networks and the visualisation of their outputs, and
  • Extending support for additional file formats and data sources, including mapping across database schema and developing elegant and user friendly conversion solutions.

The placement student will apply and develop a wide range of technical skills by actively taking part in a complete software engineering process, including:

  • Gathering requirements from in-house experts;
  • Software design at varying levels of abstraction;
  • Software implementation using the C# programming language and .NET framework;
  • Unit and integration testing;
  • The use of an automated build process and continuous integration server, and
  • Development of appropriate documentation and tools.

In addition, the student will gain hands-on experience of a modern component based approach to software development, while making use of current .NET technologies such as the Windows Communication Foundation and Windows Presentation Foundation. The placement offers the successful applicant an excellent opportunity to both broaden and deepen existing software development experience. The student will work closely with the experienced lead programmer and will receive careful mentoring to ensure excellent progress in the software project and development of their project management and team working skills. Training will be provided either in-house or externally according to needs, with this likely to focus on C# and .NET skills.

We are looking for a student with a strong background in computer science, who is genuinely interested in software development and keen to learn more. Our ideal candidate will have good problem solving skills, will have a passion for technology and software, and will be able to work both collaboratively and independently. Prior experience with a similar language (e.g.: C#, C++ or Java) is essential.
