Ranald Kelly

S
enior Geologist and basin modeller

Ranald gained a BSc in Geology with honours from Kingston University in 1995 and completed his PhD in 1999 at Royal Holloway, University of London studying fluid-rock interaction and the geochemical and isotopic composition of crustal fluids in the high grade metamorphic terrains. He gained considerable experience in microscopy, fluid inclusion studies and the measurement and interpretation of stable isotopes. He also helped develop novel extraction and isolation techniques for carbon from fluid inclusions and oxygen from mineral concentrates for isotopic analysis. He worked extensively on the Lewisian complex of NW Scotland, the high grade terrains of SW Greenland, Madagascar and Southern India and the volcanic provinces of the Eiffel district, Canary Islands and the Lake District.

He joined IGI in 1999 and has gained considerable experience as a geologist and basin modeller specialising in the geochemical evaluation of source rocks, their quality, hydrocarbon potential and maturation history using a host of industry-standard modelling packages. His focus is on the temporal and spatial distributions of heat flow in sedimentary basins and the lithosphere and the thermal and geochemical parameters that define maturation, heat flow and uplift.

His key areas of interest include the thermal and structural development of rifted environments and associated source rocks, the controls of lithospheric composition and structure on heat flow and its numerical determination, the sensitivities and role of climate variation in the calculation of paleo-heat flow values in basin modelling, the role of ground sourced heat pumps as commercial sources for space heating, glaciations and climate change. He also leads several field trips focusing on the geology of Devon, Somerset and Dorest.

Key study areas include: The source rocks, thermal history and petroleum systems of the Arctic, East Africa, the Atlantic margins of Africa and Brazil, the Falkland Islands, the sedimentary basins of India, the East China Sea, North Africa, off-shore West of Ireland, the North Sea and the Faeroe-Shetland Basin; the mineralisation and petroleum systems of Nevada and South Africa; the geothermal system and geology of South West England; and the geology of South West Greenland, Southern India, Madagascar, Kenya and NW Scotland.
