Geochemical Consultancy Manager (Director)

Introduction: The Company

Integrated Geochemical Interpretation (IGI) Ltd. is a petroleum geochemical consultancy based in the southwest of England. We provide services for the oil & gas industry in the areas of exploration and production, with an emphasis on integrating petroleum geochemistry, geology and basin modelling. Established in 1983, the company has expanded gradually and strategically, particularly in recent years, and now has a staff of 19. We have developed a supportive relaxed atmosphere with motivated and enthusiastic personnel.

IGI Ltd specialises in the integration of screening, molecular and isotopic geochemistry with a sound understanding of regional geology at basinal, license and prospect scales. These exploration studies typically incorporate 1-D and pseudo 3-D basin modelling, together with source rock volumetrics and risking. IGI also undertakes production geochemical studies, defining processes and making predictions at the reservoir scale. Our technical skills and experience allow us to offer a range of training courses in petroleum geochemistry and basin modelling, both in-house and at clients' offices, together with geological field courses. The geochemical consultancy, including our technical and administrative support, is based in a rural setting in Bideford (UK).

In addition to the geochemical consultancy, IGI Ltd. produces two software packages for the petroleum industry: p:IGI and ig.Net. The former (p:IGI) is a databasing and interpretation package for bulk, molecular and isotopic petroleum geochemical information. IGI builds and quality assures geochemical databases in p:IGI format for both single and multiple clients. The latter piece of software (ig.Net) is a sophisticated browser-based information manual covering petroleum geochemistry and basin modelling. The software team of seven staff is based in our second office in Birmingham (UK).

Overview of the Role

The post of Project Manager/Senior Basin Modeller is a key role within our team of nine geoscientists, being responsible for project management of around half of our projects, and driving the development of IGI's knowledge and application of basin modelling. The role offers the chance to work on challenging projects from all areas of the world, with frequent and diverse travel opportunities.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Management of geochemical/basin modelling projects, involving:

o Liaising with clients to establish project aims and scope
o Preparation of project quotations
o Day-to-day management of project work to meet deadlines
o Organising and managing external contractors for geochemical analytical services
o Quality assurance of final reports
o Travel to clients' main and regional offices (worldwide) to plan and initiate projects, and to present project results

  • Conducting technical work on IGI's geochemical/basin modelling projects, and preparing final reports and presentations

IGI's projects typically commence with the creation and quality assurance of a geochemical and geothermal database for the study area. Source rocks are evaluated for hydrocarbon type and yield, and measured maturity parameters reconciled against the predictions of thermal geohistory modelling. Most projects involve 1-D modelling to evaluate source rock maturation and hydrocarbon generation/expulsion history. IGI also undertakes 2-D and pseudo 3-D (map-based) modelling studies to further evaluate regional maturation and hydrocarbon expulsion and migration. The amount, timing and composition of the hydrocarbon charge are thus established and may be risked. These basin or prospect-scale predictions can be substantiated using the bulk, molecular and isotopic properties of the local oil, condensate or gas occurrences.

  • Leading the development of IGI's application of basin modelling, including liaising with software providers and responsibility for software selection and purchase.
  • Mentoring of staff to further develop their technical skills, particularly in basin modelling.
  • Development of the basin modelling modules of IGI's training courses, and presentation of these training courses both in-house and in clients' offices.
  • Contribution to the geochemical and basin modelling knowledge and functionality within our software products.
  • IGI provides plenty of opportunity for attending conferences and continual professional development; you would be encouraged to develop and extend specialist interests and skills, and to maintain research interests where appropriate. We strongly support membership of appropriate professional societies.
  • There will be frequent opportunities for travel to a wide range of countries, as IGI works with a large number of companies on challenging projects based all around the world.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Strong technical ability and extensive in-depth experience in basin modelling in a petroleum exploration context
  • IGI holds licenses for several different basin modelling software suites, and is not looking for prior experience with any one specific package; rather, we are seeking a person with excellent knowledge and understanding of basin modelling principles and methods
  • Worldwide experience involving basin modelling in diverse tectonic settings
  • A thorough knowledge of petroleum geochemistry and experience with interpretation of geochemical data
  • A higher degree in geology, geochemistry or a closely related subject, with a Ph.D. degree being strongly preferred
  • Demonstrable leadership and self-management qualities
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

Desirable

  • Several years of prior experience within the oil and gas industry is expected
  • Prior experience of project management would be highly beneficial

How to Apply
If you consider that you meet the selection criteria, please send your CV and supporting letter to Helen Davis. You should include details of two or three referees, and indicate whether we can contact them at this stage.

The deadline for applications is midday (UK time) on Friday 16th March 2012.
