Gion Kuper
Gion Kuper works at IGI as a petroleum geochemist and basin modeller. He joined the company in July 2008. His work involves the characterisation of hydrocarbons and petroleum source rock through the evaluation of geochemical data and assessing the timing and volume of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion by modelling the maturity and thermal history of petroleum systems.
Gion holds an M.Sc. in Geology from Utrecht University. Pursuing different disciplines within Geology during his study, Gion's final work involved a study of the depositional environment of Namurian black shales in the U.K. The interdisciplinary approach to the research prompted his foray into inorganic and organic geochemistry. Gion is experienced in working with Rock-Eval Pyrolysis and GC-MS data, but also with other techniques such as XRF and ICP-MS. As part of his research Gion worked in the TNO laboratory in Utrecht, gaining hands-on experience with analytical work. He also worked for the ETH Zürich on an extensive sedimentological fieldwork in Oman in 2004.
After graduating from Utrecht University in 2007, Gion worked for TNO in the Netherlands. His work on the organic geochemical data for the Dutch subsurface led to his contribution to the Petroleum Geological Atlas of the Southern Permian Basin Area. For this project he built and quality assured the geochemical databases, providing the geochemical graphs for the atlas using the p:IGI-3 software package. Gion is co-author of the Petroleum Generation and Migration chapter.
When not working, Gion likes to spend his time exploring Devon's countryside on long walks and bike rides. He has a keen interest in sports, music and the natural world and loves to explore the North Atlantic shores and the Arctic on his holidays.
