Future Development

The p:IGI software application is a key part of a very successful relationship between IGI and a wide variety of geosciences practitioners from all around the globe. IGI has developed and maintained the current version of the p:IGI application for the last 15 years. However, the current version of p:IGI is nearing the end of its useful lifetime.

While p:IGI 3 may continue to function as expected from the users' point of view, the software looks very different from the viewpoint of a software developer. Indeed, as we consider the software from the inside, it is becoming increasingly clear that p:IGI was not initially designed to support our ongoing changes and the addition of new behaviour. Furthermore, any changes made today add to the overall complexity of the code, making tomorrow's updates even more difficult.

The solution to this problem is to re-write the p:IGI software with a focus on future development and potential change. To this end, p:IGI+ will be both component based and data driven, making use of cutting edge technologies as well as tried and trusted techniques. The outcome of this work will be a p:IGI+ application that delivers the following benefits to its users:

• Potential support for the development of custom components
• Enriched data processing
• Improved mapping capabilities
• An updated user interface
• Extensible import and export functionality
• Enhanced inter-application communication
