David Gardiner

Petroleum Geochemist & Basin Modeller

Graduating in July 2011 as a Master of Geology (First Class Honours) from the University of Southampton, David joined IGI Ltd. in September of the same year as a petroleum geochemist and basin modeller. Using p:IGI and other industry-standard software David will evaluate geochemical data in order to establish petroleum source rock characteristics in conjunction with basin-wide system modelling to identify and quantify the volume and risk of any potential hydrocarbon system(s).

Focussing on isotope geochemistry, David investigated lead isotopes as part of his Master's thesis using MC-ICP-MS as well as using ICP-MS to investigate both major and trace components of an Icelandic lacustrine tephra. The result of this work led to the awareness of cyclic patterns of Icelandic eruptions and eruption centres aiding the prediction of future events; a need highlighted by the costly 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption.

During his university studies, David was awarded a funded mapping prize for his work on the igneous and metamorphic terrain of Anglesey. He also competed in the 2011 AAPG Barrel Award. Working with various hydrocarbon datasets from the Wessex Basin and the Southern North Sea David has experience with industry-standard software such as Genesis, ODM and Kingdom Suite which will complement his work in the future with IGI Ltd.

In the summer of 2010 David undertook a 6-week placement with the BGS in Scotland as part of the G-BASE program, which continues to assess the complex geochemical relationship between anthropogenic contamination and pollution with the naturally occurring geochemical markers sourced from the underlying geology of the UK.

Away from work David is a keen musician, playing drums for the last 12 years in various bands in Southern England. As a keen cook, cyclist and hiker, the Devon countryside will prove a healthy byproduct of his work here at IGI Ltd.
