Andy Mort

Petroleum Geochemist & Modeller

Andy read a BSc. in Chemistry with French (University of Liverpool), an MSc. in Petroleum Geochemistry (University of Newcastle upon Tyne) and a PhD. in Petroleum Geochemistry (IFP/Université d'Orleans) with interruptions to work in the pharmaceutical (Merck Sharp Dohme, UK) and oil (Norsk Hydro, Norway) industries. After building yachts in Canada for a while in preference to office-geology Andy moved back the UK in 2004 to join IGI where he currently works as a specialist in geochemical interpretation and basin modelling. His broad experience in petroleum systems analysis covers the geological timescale from the Infra-Cambrian oils of Oman, to the Cenozoic petroleum systems of several large Tertiary Deltas (Nile, Niger, Gulf of Mexico, South China Sea). His portfolio of work includes the Southern North Sea, Greater Caspian region, India onshore, East and West coast offshore, North Africa, Atlantic margins, Greenland, Oman and East Africa.

Andy is involved in development of IGI's flagship p:IGI software and its day to day support for p:IGI users worldwide. He is particularly interested in the use of statistical methods for the analysis of non-linear trends in higher dimensional data. The use of geochemical data in a GIS framework is another of his specialist interests at IGI.

As a self-confessed control geek he also manages IGI's data holdings and is involved in the development of the industry standard geochemical data model for the Professional Petroleum Data Management association (PPDM).

In addition to a talent for being sidetracked into research for several hours/days/months at a time, Andy also has an uncanny affinity for natural disasters during his frequent travels. He has developed a lifelong aversion to being comfortable and, although passionate about his job, would rather be surfing, mountain biking, or climbing in winter.
